For centuries myths have circulated about the monster which is said to live in the depths of Loch Ness in Scotland. Sightings of Nessie, as she is affectionately called, date back 1,500 years. Recently some sightings have been backed up with photographic ‘evidence’...... although many of these have been proved to be faked.
One explanation is that Nessie is a dinosaur that somehow escaped extinction. If this is true the monster could escape detection, even by modern sonar equipment, as Loch Ness has a surface area of 56.4 km2 (21.8 sq miles) and goes as deep as 226m (740ft) in some places. Whether Nessie exists or not, she certainly hasn’t done Scottish tourism any harm! |
